Penetration testing, explained
What penetration testing actually involves, how it differs from a vulnerability scan, and what to expect from a well-scoped engagement.
Penetration testing is a controlled, authorised simulation of real attack techniques against your systems, applications or network. Unlike automated scanning alone, a penetration test involves a tester actively attempting to exploit weaknesses to demonstrate genuine, real-world impact, not just list theoretical issues.
A well-run engagement starts with clear scoping: which systems are in play, what testing windows are acceptable, and what 'success' looks like for the exercise. From there, testers move through reconnaissance, vulnerability identification, and controlled exploitation, documenting evidence at each step.
The value of a penetration test isn't just the list of findings on its own. It's the prioritised, business-relevant picture of what an attacker could realistically achieve, and a clear path to closing the gaps that matter most.
